Ganesh Chaturthi 2020: Date, Time, and Shubh Pujan Muhurat

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most amazing and awaited festivals in India. This spectacular festival is celebrated to honour the birth of the most beloved Hindu god, Lord Ganesh. He is famously worshipped to bring good fortune and remove obstacles. The celebration of Ganesh Chathurthi takes place in a very public manner.
As per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the fourth day of the waxing moon period, in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. Ganesh Chaturthi 2020 date in India is on the 3rd Saturday of August i.e., 22nd August 2020. The Ganesh Chaturthi celebration lasts for over eleven days, with the biggest event happening on the last day known as Anant Chaturdasi day, which is on 1st September 2020.

What is Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the major traditional festivals of the Hindu community. As per the mythological stories, Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

There is a famously interesting tale related to his birth. It is believed that once while goddess Parvati was bathing, she with her spiritual powers created a human figure using some unguent and balm and injected life into it. She asked that newly born guard the door for her while she bathed. At that very moment, Shiva came to visit her better half after a long period of meditation on Mount Kailash. While doing so, Shiva was abruptly stopped by the man-god Parvati had posted at the door.

Since Shiva was unknown of this man-god, he got outraged by the check of this stranger kid and cut off his head. A few moments later he discovered that he had killed Parvati’s son. With the fear of enraging his wife, he immediately sent his attendants to bring him the head of the very first newborn living creature they could find. Surprisingly, the living creature happened to be an infant elephant. The head was chopped off as per the instruction and brought back to Lord Shiva. He placed the head on Parvati’s son’s body and brought him back to life.

This is how this elephant-headed god was welcomed into the first family of the Hindu heavens and named Ganapati or Ganesh, meaning the chief of all the ganas (all the attendants of Shiva). You can find lord Ganesh in almost all the Hindu temples. You will also see his idol on the gate of many temples and homes, carefully guarding the entrances, happily gracing Hindu marriages and other such events.

Historical Importance of Ganesh Chaturthi

However, it is not clearly known when was the Ganesh Chaturthi first celebrated, but as per the historians, it was initiated in Maharashtra by the great Maratha ruler Chatrapati Shivaji in order to promote culture and nationalism. Since then it had ever continued. History tells that Lord Ganesh was the family deity of the Peshwas, therefore there are references to similar celebrations during Peshwa times.

Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi for National Independence Movement

The eminent Indian nationalist and freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak brought back the tradition Ganesh Chaturthi when Indians were struggling for freedom from British rules. He reshaped the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival from a private family event into a grand public celebration. During that time cast system was prevailing in India which was limiting the Indians to unite and fight together for their Independence.

Tilak, being a great visionary, realised the popularity of Ganesh Chaturthi as a National Festival and the cultural importance of Lord Ganesha to bridge the gap between the Brahmins and Non-Brahmins. He believed that the country couldn’t fight the British rule until the differences within its own people are resolved. Therefore, Tilak chose wide appeal of Ganesha as the “the God of Everyman” as a rallying point for Indian protest against British rule and to unite all the social classes. Since then, this festival has been celebrated throughout Maharashtra and as also in other states with great enthusiasm and community participation. After India got independent in1947, Ganesh Chaturthi was proclaimed to be a national festival.

Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration at Home

The spectacular festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India. Due to the immense popularity of the festival, the preparations begin months in advance. Days before the main day of the occasion, homes are cleaned and Pandals (marquees) are erected at the street corners to place the idols of Lord Ganesh. Ganesh Chaturthi decorations are done with the lighting, mirrors and flowers.

As the festival begins, the lord is worshipped with great devotion and daily prayer performances. After one to ten days the worship of lord gets completed and the statues are carried on decorated floats for immersion in the sea. You can witness thousands of processions converging on the beaches, accompanied by dancing, exciting sound of drum beats, devotional songs and firecrackers, during the holy immersion of idols in the sea.
